This photo was taken in July 2006; I remember the day vividly. We had just learned that my husband had macular degeneration, a disease that would eventually lead to near blindness. It was the end of the life we’d built in the magnificent but remote countryside of Rivington. We got out our canoe, and while he fished at the base of Bell Falls, I climbed about 30 feet up a rock face to see how close I could get to the top. When I could go no further, I leaned over a boulder and saw a single green sprout growing out of a cleft in the rocks overlooking the rushing water below. The sun was low, illuminating the mist rising from the water and that single courageous seedling. I wept when I saw it. The message was so clear: life would go on. It wouldn’t necessarily be easy, or the same, but a new life would grow.
